Launch of BIOTEC Training Program on Microbial Utilization 2014

June 2014 – BIOTEC welcomed three research scientists under BIOTEC Training Program on Microbial Utilization 2014 from members of AnMicro with aim to strengthen ASEAN research community towards sustainable utilization of biological resources. This year, three successful applicants are: 1. Mr. Eldrin De Los Reyes Arguelles, National Institute of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology (BIOTECH), University of the Philippines Los Baños, Philippines 2. Mr. Jaycee Augusto Gumiran Paguirigan, University of Santo Tomas, Philippines 3. Mrs. Ika Rahmatul Layly, Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), Indonesia The program has been offering by BIOTEC during the 1st AnMicro meeting in February 2014 to build up human capital through training program on different research topics: Discovery of microbial-derived bioactive natural products and Screening and optimization of production conditions for biomass-degrading enzymes for industrial application with the supervision of BIOTEC research...

Curator Course for Microbial Resources Management

BIOTEC in collaboration with NITE Biological Research Center (NBRC) of Japan organized Curator Course for Microbial Resources Management, aiming to develop curators’ skills in the management of biological resources including storage and identification of microorganisms and management information as well as to strengthen the linkages among culture collections. This year the lecture topics focused on the areas of microbial taxonomy, trend in bio-resource management and biobusiness, legal management and biosafety which were delivered by Thai and Japanese experts. This is the second time this Curator Course for Microbial Resources Management was organized; the first one was held in January 2013. This year, the Course was organized on 22-25 April 2014 at Thailand Science Park, Pathum Thani with 40 attendees from Thai public and private organizations. BIOTEC’s contribution to the Global Catalogue of Microorganisms

Global Catalogue of Microorganisms (GCM) is a comprehensive database of microbial resources. The database is a compilation of individual strain’s information — such as nucleotide and protein sequences, genome sequence and references citing a particular strain — automatically extracted from various sources, including Genbank, Pubmed, and SwissProt, using a specially-designed tools. This system is designed to assist culture collections to manage, disseminate and share the information related to their holdings. It also provides a uniform web-based interface for the scientific and industrial communities to access the comprehensive microbial resource information and thus promote the use of microbial resources in various industries.   GCM is an initiative of WFCC World Data Centre for Microorganisms (WDCM), a data centre of The Word Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC). BIOTEC took part in this project as one of the active members of WFCC by contributing its catalogue information, which is also available at www.biotec.or.th/bcc, to GCM. BIOTEC researcher was among representatives from selected culture collections participating in the design of the database. GCM currently contains information of close to 300,000 strains from 56 collections in 28 countries and regions. The database can be accessed at http://gcm.wfcc.info/.   Source: BIOTEC’s contribution to the Global Catalogue of...
