The 5th ASEAN Microbial Biotechnology Conference (AMBC) and The 11th Meeting of ASEAN Network on Microbial Utilization (AnMicro) at Universitas Airlangga

Universitas Airlangga , with the supervision of ASEAN Network on Microbial Utilization (ANMICRO) hosted the 5th ASEAN Microbial Biotechnology Conference (AMBC) and workshop in molecular identification of bacteria on 13-14 June 2025 at Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, Indonesia. Moreover, Universita Airlangga also organized the 11th Meeting of ASEAN Network on Microbial Utilization (AnMicro) alongside the event. The 5th AMBC Conference disseminated recent findings on a broad range of topics in Microbiology and Biotechnology. Under the theme “Research in Microbiology and Biotechnology for Supporting the Sustainable Development Goals,” this conference aims to underscore the critical role of microbiological and biotechnological innovations in addressing global challenges and advancing sustainable development. The keynote and workshop sessions were covering a wide spectrum of topics—including microbiology, medical microbiology, environmental microbiology, food microbiology, mycology, bacteriology, biotechnology, cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, and more. Delegates from AnMicro member organizations attended the 11th AnMicro meeting on June 14, 2025. The 9th Meeting of ASEAN Network on Microbial Utilization at Institute of Biotechnology (IBT), Vietnam [Online]

The 9th Meeting of ASEAN Network on Microbial Utilization (AnMicro) was hosted and organized by Institute of Biotechnology (IBT), Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST). The meeting was conducted and broadcasted via online teleconference on October 21st, 2022. Dr. Tien Phi, Deputy Director of IBT, the current AnMicro secretariat, briefly updated the network activities of the AnMicro members and an overview of the 52nd ASEAN Sub-Committee of Biotechnology meeting held on October 3rd, 2022. The meeting agenda focused on the establishment of three focus teams within AnMicro network in 2022 as follows: Bioproduct development: Dr. Marilyn Brown from University of the Philippines Los Banos, Phillipines was nominated as the group leader. The 8th Meeting of ASEAN Network on Microbial Utilization at Universitas Airlangga (UAIR), Indonesia [Online]

Despite the hard situation during the COVID-19 pandemic, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Indonesia, showed their spirit and excellence to organize the 8th Meeting of ASEAN Network on Microbial Utilization (AnMicro) and the 4th ASEAN Microbial Biotechnology Conference (AMBC2021) via online teleconference. The meeting was held on September 13, 2021, co-chaired by Prof. Dr. Ni Nyoman Tri Puspaningsih, Vice Rector for Research, Innovation and Community Development of UNAIR and Dr. Lily Eurwilaichitr, Vice President, National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), Thailand who facilitated the meeting agenda as AnMicro secretariat. The meeting summarized the member’s contribution to the network activities of AmiBase and human resource development of ASEAN’s microbial research communities. One of the important achievement in 2020-2021 was the proposal of a new ASEAN Center on Microbial Utilization structure by National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC), Thailand to the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Biotechnology (SBC) and ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation (COSTI). The new center will be a valuable milestone of ASEAN microbial research on the regional and global arenas. The 7th Meeting of ASEAN Network on Microbial Utilization [Online meeting]

Due to current travel restrictions during COVID-19 pandemic, the 7th annual meeting of ASEAN Network on Microbial Utilization (AnMicro) was held fully online on September 18th, 2020. The online meeting was hosted by Thailand Bioresource Research Center (TBRC), National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC) broadcasted from Thailand Science Park, Thailand. The delegates from current AnMicro members (18 institutes/organizations from 7 ASEAN countries) participated via teleconference system to update the recent progress and discuss the future collaboration of the network. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Lily Eurwilaichitr, Vice President of NSTDA who facilitated the meeting agenda as AnMicro secretariat. This meeting presented achievements and progresses of ASEAN microbial community, including an introduction of AmiBase: ASEAN microbial data hub and its platform, the new “Bioentrepreneur” working group which integrated BioBusiness and Knowledge Sharing working groups to one umbrella, and an introduction of new members; 1.
